Avocados

The avocado is native to Mexico, Central America and parts of South America. The avocado was cultivated by the ancient Mayas, Toltecs, Aztecs, Incas and other civilizations centuries before arrivals to the New World. The new-found fruit was taken by explorers to Europe where it was gradually introduced, and by 1825 the avocado was grown in Hawaii, Africa and Polynesia.
Today, the US is the world's number one commercial producer of avocados - California and Florida are the main growing areas for this fabulous fruit, with California representing about 80% of the supply.
There are about two dozen varieties of avocados, with the Hass being the most popular fruit from CaIlfornia, and the large thinner-skinned fruit from Florida. Pinkerton, Fuerte, Bacon and Zutano are other varieties that fill in during the Hass variety harvest gaps.
Avocados contain more vitamin e than any other fruit - a powerful antioxidant that is believed to protect against heart disease, common forms of cancer by neutralizing free radicals, and slowing the aging process. This tasty fruit ranks the highest in phytochemicals - known as carotenoids - including:
- Beta-sitosterol - lowers blood cholesterol levels
- Monounsaturated fats - heart healthy fats proven to help lower LDA (the bad cholesterol), and boost HDL (the good stuff!)
- Folate - promotes healthy cell and tissue development
- Potassium - helps balance the body's electrolytes. Fact: avocados contain 60% more potassium than bananas
- Magnesium - helps produce energy and is important for muscle contraction and relaxation
- Glutathione - like vitamin e, an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals
- Fiber - lowers cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart attack
Out of hand (ready to eat when soft to the touch. The fruit should be a brilliant green - avoid dark, discolored fruit)
