Winolas

Winola (Spring Suntina) is a most impressively attractive fruit with many of Temple's features: deep reddish-orange color, finely pebbled rind texture and of medium size and consistent shape. The rind is exceptionally firm, thin with a leathery texture and fairly tight adherence making it less than easy to start to peel. But thereafter, removal is not difficult and the segments retain little albedo. Like the Minneola parent, the segments are very tender and easily ruptured so care is needed in peeling. Winola has outstanding flavor which is albeit moderately high in acid (from Minneola) and is likely to appeal to consumers who prefer an intensely flavored mandarin variety. It has a high juice content in excess of 55%. Winola is a triploid and is invariably seedless.
South African Winolas are available in late September and early October.
